Welcome

In the spirit of the upcoming holiday we'll keep this program report short.

The Law Enforcement Torch run is back!  Read below for details.  Let's support the Law Enforcement Officials who support Special Olympics through activities and fundraisers.

We need ATHLETES and supporters at EVERY spot!

Please contact me if you or know someone that is interested in participating/supporting.

Free Tickets!

I have 5 tickets to Family Day at the Arcade International Raceway for June 12th.  It is a benefit for United Way.  If you would like the tickets please let me know... first come first serve!

Med Fest!

We understand that getting an athlete's medical form is sometimes difficult, we are proposing to hold a 'Med Fest" in which we would have doctors available on one day and any athlete can come out to get their physical and medical form signed.  This is a great opportunity to get as many athlete's forms updated as possible.  If you think your team has athletes that would attend please let me know.

APPLEBEES LAW & ORDERS IS TOMORROW!!!

Saturday, May 2nd - Regional Basketball

Announcement:  We now have a Western Region fundraiser!  See below for details!

Remember the Date:

*Summer State Games - COMPLETE packets are due to the Western Office no later than May 1st.  Spots will open up to other teams/clubs if registrations are not in.

*Registrations for the Super Regional Basketball Competition in Waterloo is May 1st.  Registration forms go to Robin Mitchell (rmitchell@nyso.org) or faxed to: 585-586-7065. Please notify the Western Region Office if your team will need transportation.  The informational flyer can be found online.

*Registrations for the Western Central Track and Field on May 30th are due no later than Monday May 4th to the Western Office.

Fundraiser!

The Western Region has an official fundraiser.  We have teamed up with Niagara Chocolates and have the opportunity to sell candy bars.  Every team can participate!

How it works:  Similar to your local library, you will "sign out" the chocolate bars and then return the money when sold.  You can customize your order from flavors to how many bars you take at a time.  This way, noone is stuck with a basement full of melty chocolate bars.

Please contact the Western Office for more details or if you have any questions.

A big thank you to the Chautauqua Lakers for the idea and have also been very successful with this fundraiser in the past.

Sport Trainings

Volleyball: Date/Time TBD

Equestrian:  Date/Time TBD,

SASi High Hurdles, Elma, NY

Reminder of the Week

Please notify the Western Region Office if you receive a donation of any kind ($, food, t-shirts, equipment...).  Special Olympics keeps records of this information to most importantly thank our generous donors and also to have on record for budgeting purposes.

When: Wednesday, April 29, 2009 from 5:00-8:30 PM

Special Olympics and the Law Enforcement Torch run has an incredible opportunity with Applebee's.  On Wednesday, April 29,2009 we have the opportunity to do "Law & Orders" again in your area!  From 5-8:30pm law enforcement officers will be greeting the public, helping the waitresses get drinks, and bus tables while educating the customers about our initiatives.  On each table there will be an envelope where the customers can leave a donation for Special Olympics New York.  Historically in events like this we can raise anywhere between $500 - $1000 at one restaurant and with over 60 locations across the state we should have an amazing success!

Participating locations in our area include:  Clarence, Blasdell, Niagara Falls, Amherst, Lockport, Jamestown, Delaware Ave., West Seneca, Cheektowaga, Lancaster, Olean and Batavia.

New Athletes

The word is out!  The office is receiving many requests for new athletes to join Special Olympics!  These athletes cannot experience the joy of Special Olympics without you.  I periodically send out emails when I receive athlete referrals.  Please respond whether or not your club is accepting new athletes.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run to benefit Special Olympics is the movement's largest grassroots awareness and fundraising initiative, raising more than $30 million internationally in 2008.  At its most basic level the Law Enforcement Torch Run was started as a group of officers carrying the Torch into Special Olympics games and ceremonies and it has evolved into one of the largest fundraising programs for the organization.  Law Enforcement Officers have the opportunity to play a crucial role in the success of the events held here in the Rochester Area.

This is a tremendous opportunity with Applebee's to raise both funds and awareness for our programs!  Law Enforcement Torch Run has been holding these types of events for almost 20 years, but never have we had an event with this much potential.  It is my privilege to invite you to join us at this fun and exciting event.

With support like yours, we can continue to show that when people with and without intellectual disabilities are brought together by Special Olympics, myths are dispelled, attitudes are changed, and new opportunities to embrace and celebrate people with intellectual disabilities are created.

Summer State Games Announcement from CEO Neal Johnson

The Western Region Program Committee has met and came up with a tentative arrangement of where Summer State Games allocations will go.  I hope to have these numbers out by the end of the week.

MEMO FROM CEO NEAL JOHNSON

Since my last communication, our organization continues to face economic challenges. In that letter I mentioned that our organization has had to budget expenses to match a very conservative fundraising outlook.  To continue to ensure that we meet our financial needs, we have had to reduce our organizational expenses by more than $1,000,000, including reductions in our operational expenses, personnel costs, and unfortunately, we now have to change the shape of Summer Games.  This proved to be very difficult, knowing we were going to disappoint a lot of people.

This year's Summer Games 2009 will see a reduction in the total number of athletes by 35% and only one day of competition.  With a smaller time frame for competition, making this reduction evenly across every sport brings a number of events to a level where quality competition will not exist.  To preserve a portion of our larger events, we moved the allocations from some of the low participation sporting events.  We also needed to keep in mind that with one day of competition, our larger events would not be able to sustain full participation while maintaining quality competition.  With that said here is what events will make up the 2009 Summer Games:

Aquatics - 100% participation*
Athletics - 85% participation*
Basketball Skills - 100% participation*
Basketball Team - 80% participation*
Bowling - 0% participation*
Gymnastics - 0% participation*
Powerlifting - 100% participation*
Tennis - 100% participation*
Volleyball Skills - 0% participation*
Volleyball Team - 0% participation*

*based on 2008 Summer Games Participation

I appreciate your understanding during these unprecedented times.  It was with no great ease that these decisions were reached.  The reductions to Summer Games were made very carefully and strategically.  In spite of our economic environment, we look forward to the great competitions we will see all around the state this spring.  It is essential for us all to do what we can to continue moving forward with our mission.  I would ask each of you to explore ways in which you can help support our athletes.  Thank you for all you do.

When: Wednesday, April 29, 2009 from 5:00-8:30 PM

This April, the Special Olympics and the Law Enforcement Torch run has an incredible opportunity with Applebee's.

Memo from President & CEO Neal Johnson

Please find below a memo from Special Olympics New York's President and CEO addressing many of your concerns regarding finances.  A copy of this memo can also be found on the online file folder for distribution to others.

Dear Athletes, Families, Volunteers, and Friends:

We have had an amazing start to 2009. On January 15th, Special Olympics New York served as host of the Final Leg of the Law Enforcement Torch Run as it made its way from Athens, Greece to Poland, South Africa, and China on its way to Idaho. Over 350 members of Law Enforcement participated with World Games Athletes in a ceremonial Torch Run from City Hall in Manhattan past the World Trade Center and Police Memorials on its way to a moving ceremony at the Winter Garden Atrium at the World Financial Center.

On Saturday, February 7th, more than 900 athletes and coaches came together in Rochester to celebrate and compete in Special Olympics New York's 2009 State Winter Games. Athletes demonstrated their outstanding abilities in several competitive sports, including Nordic and Alpine Skiing, Snowshoeing, Floor Hockey, and Floor Hockey Skills.

On Sunday, our "Winter Weekend" concluded with the 9th Annual Rochester Polar Plunge. More than 1,500 enthusiastic Special Olympics New York supporters jumped into the frigid waters of Lake Ontario and raised just over $200,000 in support of our athletes. Another 1,000 Plungers jumped in at events held in Fishkill and on Long Island, for our athletes.

Later in February, our ten World Games athletes did New York proud, winning several medals in Boise, Idaho and gaining new friends and memories that will last a lifetime. Just this past week, we participated in the Fourth Annual Hill Day in
Washington where New York athlete Kassie Glover of Syracuse stole the hearts of our federal legislators from New York, encouraging them to do all they can to support us.

We again, are incredibly grateful for your amazing dedication, spirit, and support in making these and our other successes a
reality.

Outside the realm of our control, we continue to face the most challenging economic period that most of us have ever witnessed. We completed our 2009 plan in the dawning of the uncertainty this past summer/early fall. Once it appeared that the situation wasn't getting better, we made the difficult choices to reduce our expenses, and only invest in core mission
activities and budget expenses to match the very conservative development outlook.

There is no blame for the difficult economic environment in which we live. These times don't fit the standard mold. ALL of us, however, must invest in moving forward with our mission. I hope that each of you can appreciate the need to plan conservatively and that you do whatever you can to help us to generate the funds needed to sustain our programs. Now, more than ever, we need your help by identifying potential sponsors, joining in our local and statewide initiatives, and even simply making a direct donation.

Despite all the doom and gloom, we are still 365 days a year, still free to our athletes and their families, and 47,654 strong with 3,500 competitions statewide.

We are Special Olympics NEW YORK!

With Warmest Regards,

Neal J. Johnson
President & CEO

Submitting Forms

Registrations - Please provide the appropriate registration form to alleviate confusion during registration.  (ie. if you are registering athletes for soccer skills, use the skills registration, not the team form)

Rosters - Please use the correct season as each season has all of the sports offered that season.

Volunteer Applications/Application for Sport Training - Again, please submit to the Western Region office so your information can be documented.  Also, the Program Director needs to sign off on these forms so if the form is sent somewhere else, it will be sent back to me, making the time you receive your certification/re-certification and/or credntials that much longer.

Young Athletes

Young Athletes

Young Athletes is an innovative sports play program for children ages 2-7 with intellectual disabilities, designed to introduce them to the world of sports prior to Special Olympics eligibility (age 8). This is a fun, participation-based program that teaches eye-hand coordination and motor skills through games and group activities. The Young Athletes program introduces children with intellectual disabilities and their families to the world of Special Olympics by pursuing the following goals:

*Engage children with intellectual disabilities through developmentally appropriate play activities designed to foster physical, cognitive, and social development.

*Welcome family members of children with intellectual disabilities to the Special Olympics network of support.

*Raise awareness about the abilities of children with intellectual disabilities through inclusive peer participation, demonstrations and other events.

This is a versatile program that can work in various learning situations. The program is designed to be simple enough for families to use at home with their child. It is also appropriate for preschools, schools, playgroups and recreation programs to use with small groups of young children.

The program includes several resources to get started including a Young Athletes Activities Guide, a Training DVD, Young Athletes Equipment Kit and and website for further resources, materials and information.

For more information on how to get started please contact Shelby Baker at sbaker@nyso.org
