| SPECIAL OLYMPICS NEW YORK PROGRAM REPORT November 13, 2009 | | | | | Greetings Coaches, Volunteers and Fans! Welcome back to the Western Region Program Report. Exciting Invitation Special Olympics athletes have been invited to play a short game during the halftime at a University at Buffalo Men's Basketball game. This is an open invitation to all basketball athletes to come out and show everyone their hard work, courage and determination. Please refer any athletes that may want to participate to the regional office. 2010 Schedule The new year will be here before we know it! The event directors winter/summer events have been working hard to establish competition dates. Dates, times and locations will be posted below as they are scheduled as well as on the Western Region calendar online. A quick review of certifications Fall Season Feedback Meetings Although there will be a brief fall season feedback meeting at the upcoming conference, there are 2 scheduled individual feedback meetings. Read below in the Save the Date section. | | | Best in the West! | | | Check here for tips, updates and reminders so that every coach, volunteer and fan can be the Best in the West The winter season is just around the corner! If you are involved with a winter sport here are a few reminders: *ALL coaches must hold a current sport certification *At least ONE of those coaches must hold a certification in the sport you are training/competing in; all other coaches may hold a coach certification in another sport *All coaches are encouraged to get a sport specific certification for the respective sport you are training in *Current medical/consent forms must be carried with the coach to all practices and any new/updated forms be sent to the Western Region office *Don't forget your Winter Rosters! This is a fun, participation-based program that teaches eye-hand coordination and motor skills through games and group activities. The Young Athletes program introduces children with intellectual disabilities and their families to the world of Special Olympics by pursuing the following goals: ~Engage children with intellectual disabilities through developmentally appropriate play activities designed to foster physical, cognitive, and social development. ~Welcome family members of children with intellectual disabilities to the Special Olympics network of support. ~Raise awareness about the abilities of children with intellectual disabilities through inclusive peer participation, demonstrations and other events.
