Welcome back to the Western Region Program Report

Please wish all athletes attending this year's 2010 Winter State Games this weekend!

We have 45 athletes representing the Western Region that will be competing in Floor Hockey, Nordic and Snowshoe.

Coming up:

WINTER SEASON FEEDBACK MEETINGS ARE NEXT WEEK!  Please red below for details.

Needed:

We are looking for volleyball clinicians.  You do not have to be a current coach to be a clinician.  This person would provide volleyball training as needed.  The training usually is schedule for 2 hours and would involve teaching Special Olympics Volleyball from the basics of volleyball up to the skills and team competition.

I understand there may be some individuals that were clinicians in the past- if you are still interested in this please contact me!

Do you know someone that may not be involved in Special Olympics right now but feel they would be a good clinician, please let me know.

Winter Season Feedback Meetings

It is very important for volunteers/coaches that have participated in any winter related activity to attend.
Even if your team/school group trained but did not participate in a competition; we need you there too!
This is not a "head coach" meeting but a meeting for all involved.  Every stakeholder gets a voice.

Why attend?
Feedback meetings allow coaches to reflect on the winter season.
By coming together we can generate active conversation to identify not only any needs or areas for improvement but also to recognize successes and build off of those for continued success and be able to duplicate this for the entire region.

Volunteer input is crucial to the success of Special Olympics.
Volunteers getting together have proven to provide volunteers/coaches additional resources and insight that no training manual will provide.

Please keep in mind our ultimate goal is to provide the best possible experience for the athletes to train and compete.

Some questions to think about: Are we accomplishing this goal?  If not, what ideas are there for improvement?  How will we accomplish this goal?  What would your "perfect winter season" look like?  What have you done or have been a part of that could be used as a best practice for others?  Does the training club need any assistance (recruiting more athletes, facilities, need for more coaches...)?

Dates and Locations of the feedback meetings:

1.  Tuesday, February 9th
Olean Library (the building with the books, not the Old Library Restaurant)
134 North 2nd Street, Olean, 14760
6:00 PM start time

Rosters vs Registration forms

There has been some confusion between submitting roster forms and registration forms.
To clarify:

*Roster:

This document will list ALL  athletes that train.  This includes athletes regardless if they attend a competition or not.
All teams must submit a roster by the 3rd week of practices.
This form has a spot for the head coach to fill out some basic information including name, contact information, training club location, days and times.
There is also a place to list ALL coaches.  Please include their email as well.
There then is a place to list all athletes and what sport they compete in.  In some cases, only one sport will be checked.  Other teams may train in several sports so this is a way to submit one roster instead of one for each sport.  This roster is seasonal

*Registration Form:
This form is used to submit athlete names and scores/times for a specific competition.
There are separate forms for skills and team competition
These forms will ask for more specific information depending on the sport registering for.
Example: for a basketball competition a skills score must be submitted for each athlete competing in the skills competition and a team score if registering a team.
Please note that there are coach registration forms.  These must be submitted as well.

***Tip: If you fill out these forms electronically and save them, the next time you need to submit one of these forms it is already filled out!  All you need to do is make any changes (adding and/or removing athletes, updating scores and times...)

Call for Clinicians

The Western Region is looking for volunteers that are passionate about Special Olympics and want to be a part of educating new volunteers.  A clinician is comfortable in a teaching/presenting environment.

Types of clinicians:

*General Session clinician - The general session is what gives new volunteers information on our history, mission, goals and basics of involvement.  The clinician would present general session material to groups as needed throughout the region either at seasonal conferences or at individual training clubs.

*Sport clinician - provide sport specific training(s) either at seasonal conferences or as needed throughout the year.  This person can be certified to teach a specific sport or multiple sports.

Training and education will be provided.

Please contact me if you are interested in either of these volunteer positions.
